Bold lips are everywhere this season, but they're not always the easiest look to pull off. When you get them right they can be very eye-catching, so it's worth it to learn how to do them properly. Today I'm sharing my 3 best tips to help you pull off the bold lip look.
Tip #1: Exfoliate lips really well
This is one time when prep work makes all the difference. If your lips are chapped or peeling at all, the slightest little cracks will show up more with dark lipstick. Use a washcloth or old toothbrush dipped into an exfoliating lip scrub (learn more about my favorite one below), then lightly rub your lips. Once you're finished, add a tiny amount of serum or moisturizer and a layer of chapstick to seal in the moisture.
Tip #2: Line lips like a pro
It's important to take your time and line your lips very carefully — especially if you're pale, like me. It's more likely for errors to show when contrasted next to lighter skin tones. Use a lip liner the same color as your lipstick, or as close to that color as you can get. Once your lips are perfectly lined, fill in the remaining space with lipstick or a lip stain.
Tip #3: Only highlight one feature at a time
You've heard the old “legs or boobs” fashion rule, right? It says you should only show off one feature at a time because anything more is too distracting. Well, the same goes with makeup. If you're sporting a bold lip, you need to tone down your eyes.
I went with neutral shades on my eyes on applied them very lightly so it barely looks like I have any shadow on at all. A dark smokey eye or heavy colors would have been too much.

Current Favorite Lip Scrub
You already know I love organic products, so it probably comes as no surprise to learn that my favorite lip scrub is organic and cruelty-free. It's made by Stewart & Clair and you can buy it at Rodale's.
The main thing I love about it is how yummy it tastes, but it also has peppermint in it that leaves my lips feeling slightly tingly and invigorated. It also has organic sugar crystals in it that are super sweet! So I guess you could say it makes lips very kissable. 🙂

Here's one last tip to help you out in case you make a mistake when you're doing your lips: Dip a small, angled lip brush in foundation, and lightly brush along the edges of your lips — making sure to blend really well — to cover any tiny errors.
You shouldn't use concealer, because it's typically a lighter shade than your foundation and it would make it look like you had a light outline around the outer edges of your lips, which wouldn't be good.
