I don't know about you, but I love the look of smooth and silky mermaid waves. They're so much prettier than beach hair that looks overly sun-bleached and fried at the ends. I've been testing out a new line of hair products to help get the look of mermaid waves and wanted to share my results! Here's how to get mermaid hair that looks smooth, healthy, and silky.

Mermaid Hair vs Beach Hair
Yes, I DO realize mermaids aren't real, but do me a favor and imagine all the mermaids you've seen in cartoons and movies. The main difference between their hair and beach hair is that mermaids have smooth, silky waves. Their hair is bouncy and almost looks like it's flowing in the water — even when they're on dry land. Mermaid hair looks very soft and touchable…
On the flip side, beach hair looks textured and dry — like you've been playing in salt water all day and letting the sun dry it. (It almost looks a little crunchy, for lack of a better word.)
How to Get Mermaid Hair
Neither look is right or wrong, but today I'm going to tell you how to get mermaid hair. These are the steps to take to get soft, silky, and flowing curls:
- Wash & condition hair
- Add a heat protectant spray
- Blow dry hair on a low setting (flip head upside down while drying to add lift at the roots)
- Use a hair straightener to add loose, wavy curls
- Avoid adding hairspray when you're finished, so hair will fall into loose curls and still appear shiny (hairspray tends to dull the appearance of hair)
By doing it this way instead of adding texturizer and letting hair dry naturally, you'll get smoother curls. The shine spray protects hair from heat damage and makes it look healthier, and the heat from the straightener makes it appear even shinier!
TIP: If you prefer the look of colored mermaid hair, here are my tips to dye your hair a pretty shade of pastel pink. It's semi-permanent, so it'll wash out after a few shampoos!
Mermaid Waves Hair Products
I mentioned that I've been experimenting with new hair products to get the look. My mom and I were originally drawn to these because we loved the name! It's pretty hard to resist a product that's actually called “Mermaid Hair”.
We mentioned on our Instagram account that we were going to use the bottles to decorate our vintage bathroom because we liked the cute packaging so much, but we were happily surprised to discover we liked the way they worked. Good surprises like that are always best!
The only two places I've seen the Mermaid Hair products are in Urban Outfitters and Anthropologie. FYI: The shampoo and conditioner are both “Top Rated” at Anthro. These bottles lasted approximately 2 months for me (even on my long hair).
I hope these tips help! For a similar look, check out my beach waves tutorial for short hair.
