Steps to Create a Basic Messy Bun
- Gather your hair and twist it into a donut shape, then secure a hair band around the outer edge.
- Begin pulling random pieces loose from the band until you’ve reached the desired level of messiness.
- Use a bobby pin to secure some or all of the loose ends. Your bun will look neater if you secure the ends and it will also cause the wisps to “poof” out further when you pin them. Leave wisps unpinned if you prefer a messier look.
TIP: We suggest only pulling a few pieces loose for a wispier look when you’re headed to work, and save the messier styles for the weekend. Pretty much anything goes for school!
TIP: If you're working with shorter hair, you'll need to plan a lower bun — towards the nape of your neck. The higher the bun, the more loose wispy pieces you'll have to pin up. If your hair is long, you can plan your bun anywhere from the top of your head on down!

Messy Buns Hair Products
Here are a few of our favorite hair products to help master the messy bun:
- Frederic Fekkai Full Blown Volume Styling Whip: Use this mousse if you're creating a bun on clean hair because it will help hair hold the shape better.
- Batiste Dry Shampoo – Clean & Light Bare: Use this if you're creating a bun on 2nd day hair to help rid roots of the oily/greasy look. I love this new option from Batiste because it's extremely lightly scented so the smell won't compete with your perfume.

i adore this post! i have my hair pulled back 90 percent of them time.
Makes sense! I guess it’s a pretty go-to look for photographers so your hair won’t fall in front of the lens or get in the way. 🙂
Thanks for the tips! I can never get my messy bun just right! I will have to try these!

Thanks for stopping by, Ashley! That’s part of the fun of the messy bun…it doesn’t have to look perfect. 😉
Love a great messy bun! I loved doing messy buns when I had shorter hair, now that it’s longer it’s more of a challenge, but I’m loving all of this inspiration!
Your hair must be really long! When we have ours longer we still do a messy bun, it just turns into more of a topknot… all piled on top of the head. 🙂
I love messy buns! They are my go-to most days!
Great tips. I have curly hair so my hair is always up and its always messy.
We both have straight hair. 🙂 Curly hair looks even cuter in a messy bun sometimes!
I think I’ve worn my hair in a messy bun every day this week…it’s my go to for busy mornings!
Same here. In fact, I think I’ve worn it in a messy bun every day the entire month so far!
I end up in a messy bun 90% of the time… quick and easy. It also is super cute! Thanks for sharing these!

Thanks for stopping by, Christina. 🙂 Have an awesome week!
Oh wow, I had no idea there were standards and styles when it came to the messy bun!! I really love the ones that look like they’re tied in a knot-they just appeal to me for some reason. However, I typically rock the mom bun ha. Thanks for sharing!
I like the knots, too. Your hair looks really thick in your avatar picture, so you could probably do a knot! (Mine’s too short)
