Tips for Long, Loose Curls

January 7, 2016 |

I've been getting my hair inspiration from Olivia Palermo recently and have been wearing my hair in long, loose curls. Her hair looks amazing in every photo I've ever seen of her! She's a model and socialite who always looks flawless (in case you were wondering).

Nourish Hair from Within

The first step towards getting bouncy curls like Olivia's is to nourish it from within so it will be healthy and shiny! The healthy foods you consume contain vitamins and nutrients that help hair to grow long and strong.

A typical female needs around 1,200 calories per day — even more if you're really active! Be sure you're eating healthy foods and getting enough of them, since a diet too low in calories will starve your hair of the essentials it needs to grow.

Go for Trims Regularly

Olivia's hair never looks like it has split ends, so that's another reason why it appears so unbelievably bouncy and healthy. Experts suggest trimming the ends every 6-8 weeks.

You don't need to have a lot trimmed off unless hair is really dry and damaged at the end. Ask your stylist to inspect your ends to see how much needs to be trimmed. It's a good idea to trim it above any split ends you have so they won't split any further.

Once you've trimmed all the dead weight, you can concentrate on growing healthy hair from then on out!

TIP: Read my Healthy Hair Tips and 10 Tips to Avoid Split Ends posts to learn the best ways to get bouncy hair.

Protect Hair from Harmful Elements

Once you've trimmed the broken hair, the next step is to find a really good hair protectant — both to give hair shine and to prevent further damage. I have quite a few that I like!

I recommend Macadamia Oil Healing Treatment from Amazon (you can also pick it up at Target!). It's “college budget” friendly and the smell is absolutely amazing!!

TIP: Squeeze a drop or two of oil in the palm of your hands and disperse it evenly through the ends of your hair. Never apply it near the scalp, because your scalp produces enough oil to cover that area. I usually apply oil when my hair is dry so I can make sure I'm not adding too much and weighing my hair down. It's better to go back and add extra drops later than too apply too much in the first place.

If you prefer a spray-on treatment option, TRESemme Keratin Flat Iron Smoothing Spray is one I also use and highly recommend.

Use the Right Tool for the Job

The next step to getting bouncy curls is to find the perfect curling iron or flat iron. You can use either, but I've been using a curling iron because I recently got one as a Christmas present that I really love!

To create loose curls, grab a two-inch section of hair and wrap it around the barrel of the curling iron. Curl hair from roots to tips while pointing the barrel down towards the floor. Hold hair tightly around the barrel for 10 – 20 seconds, then release.

I recommend the NuMe 25mm Tourmaline Curling Wand (and yes, that wand with the 25mm barrel is what I used to get the curls above).

Finish Off with a Light Spray for Hold

The final step to amazing curls is to hold your hair in place with a great hairspray. I like using one with a fairly light hold so my curls will still bounce.

My favorite is the Sebastian Shaper Spray. (I get the original formula, not the Plus+ formula.) I live in a really humid, Southern climate, and this spray holds my hair all day without feeling sticky. It's also not stiff, so it's good for days when I want that loose, bouncy look like Olivia Palermo. If you read the reviews on Amazon or ULTA, you'll see that it's a really great hairspray that lots of people recommend!

Thanks Ashley. 🙂 You don’t need a ton of products, just be sure to eat healthy, drink lots of water and get trims regularly. If you do that and then take care of it by not adding too much heat and don’t brush it when it’s wet, all of those things will help more than buying product. (If you have to get just one product, go with some type of heat protectant!)

Another question (sorry), but what’s your skincare routine? Yours is glowing (I have problem skin and always looking for tips). Thank you 🙂

      January 11, 2016 at 10:37 PM

Hi Helen! Thank you! I can put that on my list of tutorials to do! 🙂 I don’t do a whole lot. I wash it every morning and every night. I never go to bed with makeup on. I moisturize and use sunscreen. I use Mario Badescu pimple drying cream whenever I even get a hint of a breakout. That stuff is amazing! 🙂 My mom swears the best thing you can do is drink lots of water.

I’ve heard of Mario Badescu. They sell it on Beauty Bay here in the UK. I’m going to go buy some now if they stock that specific product.

I drink loads of water but sadly it doesn’t make a massive difference. I think my bad skin is genetic, but I’ll try anything to improve it! Yes, a tutorial would be great 🙂

      January 12, 2016 at 9:37 PM

I’ll definitely work on a blog post about that then. I know how that feels because I had terrible skin for a while about 2 years ago and had to go to the dermatologist because it got so bad. He gave me lots of tips, so I’ll come up with a list of everything I’ve changed since then. I know one thing that really worked for me when he told me to STOP experimenting all the time with new products. At the time, I was constantly trying something new in the hopes that it would cure my bad skin and it was actually making my skin worse when I did that. OK, so I’ll work on writing that post this weekend (bc I’m in school during the week and I have a math test to study for rn) 🙂

      January 13, 2016 at 2:16 AM

Thank you. I managed to buy some Mario Badescu products, fingers crossed! Yes, I’ve been to the dermatologist a few times and it’s still bad. I’m on medication for it, but that only seems to help slightly. I’ll try the Mario Badescu things and then if that fails, I’ll try not experimenting! You might be right, maybe I need to let my face ‘settle’… Thank you for doing the post though, really looking forward to it!

Good luck with your Math test 🙂

Thank you for the suggestion of Mario Badescu. It’s actually already made a difference!

I’m glad the Mario drying cream helped out! I put it on at the first sign of a pimple and it dries it up by the next day. Miracle stuff! I’ll work on finishing up my skincare post this weekend. 🙂

You are so incredibly pretty! Gorgeous hair. I wish mine would go like that but it’s far too frizzy :(.

    • DAISY TERRELL says

      January 9, 2016 at 2:28 PM

Wow, thank you! 🙂 Mine gets frizzy sometimes at the coast, but there isn’t a lot of humidity where I live in Texas.

I’m UK based. It rains here (particularly at the moment) constantly. I don’t think even if I moved to somewhere dryer though that my hair would ever look as good as yours though!
